About the faculty

The building of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Mostar

The development of industry after the Second World War conditioned the need for highly educated personnel of the mechanical profession, so that on November 11, 1959, the High Technical School of Mechanical Engineering (VTSHMS) was established. From its beginning, VTSHMS was closely connected with the economy, which determined its physiognomy. A good part of the teaching and assistant staff was hired from the "SOKO" factory. The study lasted three years, or six semesters.
The Association of Mechanical Faculties of Yugoslavia immediately accepted VTSHMS in Mostar as an equal member, and in 1968 it was entrusted with the organization of a conference on "Current issues of education of mechanical engineering personnel". In 1969, Meetings of Mechanical Engineering Students were organized in Mostar.
In July 1968, VTSHMS in Mostar was accepted into the then only university in Bosnia and Herzegovina - the University of Sarajevo. VTSHMS became the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Mostar within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Sarajevo in 1970. The statute stipulates that the profile of a graduate engineer of production and construction is formed, and the teaching lasts for four and a half years, ie nine semesters.
In September 1972, the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Mostar resolved the issue of space by obtaining a building in the former Western camp in Mostar.
In the following period, the development of the Faculty is mainly reflected in the procurement of equipment for the planned laboratories and the sending of teachers and associates for postgraduate studies in more developed scientific research centers.
In 1973, the Faculty Council passed a new Statute, according to which the total study for a graduate engineer was shortened to eight semesters. On November 28, 1975, a decision was made to separate the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Mostar from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Sarajevo and to form an independent Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Mostar.
On February 11, 1977, the University of Mostar was formed, consisting of: the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics, and the Pedagogical Academy.
In November 1977, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering organized the first postgraduate study, and after that three more were organized: 1984, 1989 and 1997.
From its founding until the war, the Faculty organized several scientific and professional gatherings, such as: III and VIII Yugoslav Aerospace Congress, DIAMETER '79, '81, '84, '87; III Symposium "Machines and Mechanisms, University Research and Application in Industry", XVI Yugoslav Conference on Production Engineering and many others.
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the publisher of a large number of textbooks and collections of assignments. Teachers and associates of the faculty work on many scientific research projects through the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which in 1986 grew into the Institute of Mechanical Engineering. The Institute building was completed in 1989. Before the war, the Institute consisted of 16 laboratories, a construction bureau, and a computer center distributed in four institutes.
Until the war, 1767 students graduated from the Faculty, 76 master's theses and 25 doctoral dissertations were defended.
During the war, several members of the collective were persecuted and killed, and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was left without any material means, facilities, equipment, etc. However, in December 1993, in indescribably difficult conditions, the University continued to operate. All those who had the status of teachers or associates at the University, and who were in the eastern part of Mostar, were hired. In 1994, the Decision on the temporary engagement of several professionals was passed, so that the basic conditions were created for the enrollment of students in the first year and for the continuation of studies of students in higher years. Classes are organized in Jablanica for first-year students from that area, and in 1995 in Konjic.
All assistants are sent to postgraduate studies in Zenica in 1995. In 1995/96 year, over 200 students studied at the Faculty.
The university is housed in the buildings of the former North Camp, a pre-war barracks. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering gets a building in which it houses its cabinets, classrooms, laboratories and student service.
As a result of very active and fruitful cooperation with the Universities of Paderborn and Regensburg in Germany, donations were made to the Faculty, so that all classrooms were equipped with modern computers and connected to the Internet. Funds were obtained for the construction and adaptation of the Institute building, where a computer center with the most modern equipment is located. Also, various European universities donate books and furniture.
Thanks to the successful cooperation with several European universities (Paderborn-Germany, Liege-Belgium, Graz-Austria, Udine-Italy, Barcelona-Spain, Lyngby-Denmark) from December 1998 to 2001, the Faculty was actively involved in the implementation of the TEMPUS project - " New structure of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering ".
Within this project, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the first faculty in the countries of the former Yugoslavia to introduce a program adapted to European standards and enable students to obtain a diploma, recognized in the countries of the European Union. The new study program began to be applied from the school year 2000/2001.
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Mostar received the support of all mechanical engineering faculties in the country for this Project, and at a later stage, all these faculties took an active part in the implementation of the Project.
In addition to the development of a new study structure, through this project, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has achieved significant results in terms of procurement of equipment, as well as through staff training. From the Project funds:
20 latest generation computers, two graphics stations, a scanner, two color printers, a professional A3 laser printer and a server were procured, several dedicated software was procured, such as I-DEAS, AutoCAD 2000, software for the work of the student service, procured through one hundred titles of the latest world literature in mechanical engineering and related fields,
10 teachers and assistants from the Faculty, and 7 teachers and assistants from other faculties of mechanical engineering spent a total of 40 weeks at 13 different universities in 7 countries, which gained valuable experience in improving curricula and the overall system of work at the Faculty,
a number of scripts and other publications of the Faculty were printed.
Academic 2002/03 yr. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is opening a new department - computer engineering, in accordance with modern directions of development of technique and technology and application of computers in industry and economy in general. The new department is attractive to a large number of young students.
Today, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Mostar strives to keep pace with the most modern teaching and scientific trends in modern European countries and to be included in the Bologna Process.
